In 1997, celebrating one year since its opening, MAC Niterói inaugurated the exhibition "Entre Esculturas e Objetos" curated by Luiz Camillo Osório. Featuring works from the museum's collection—a collection that was then newly created, as a result of the loan agreement with the João Sattamini Collection (CJS) and the first works donated to the MAC Niterói Collection (MAC)—the exhibition addressed issues related to the choice of medium in contemporary Brazilian art, revealing the multiple poetic possibilities embraced by "sculptor artists."
Throughout its 28 years of existence, completed in September 2024, MAC Niterói has undergone profound changes. Among the more than 60 pieces exhibited here, created by 47 different artists, this second chapter brings to the public the issue addressed by Osório at the beginning of the process, but also adds a perspective on how a museum's collection is built over the years.
The curatorial choice was based on the year the works were included in the museum's collection, regardless of the year they were created. The first part features works included between 1996 and 2000, in other words, in the last century, offering a glimpse of the early stages of the process. In the second part, we see the consolidation of the collection through works incorporated between 2001 and 2018. The choice of 2018 as a cut-off point is due to the fact that it marks the year of the death of collector João Sattamini, signifying the conclusion of his collecting process, which played an important role in the history of this museum. During this period, we can observe the paths chosen by both the collector and the museum institution to build their collections. In the last gallery, we can see works included in the museum's own collection over the last six years, reflecting the institution's current approach to its collection.
Over time, the CJS has undergone changes, and some artists are no longer part of it. We decided to pay tribute to three of these singular artists (Lygia Clark, Hélio Oiticica, and Frans Krajcberg), symbolizing the physical absence of their works, but still integrated into the history and aesthetic thought of the museum.
We also highlight the work of the MAC Niterói museology department. If a museum's purpose is the preservation/safeguarding of heritage, this is the department that works daily toward that end. In this exhibition, it is possible to see the meticulous work developed over the years, demonstrating the importance of museums in our country. All the works on display here have undergone a thorough cleaning process, and 14 of them were restored to be exhibited.
With this exhibition, MAC Niterói reaffirms its mission to "promote public interest and dialogue about contemporary art, through the preservation, appreciation, research, documentation, and communication of the museum's heritage."

"The problem of the object, as it is invoked in contemporary art, carries within itself a contradiction: it is the creative liberation that results from the overcoming of traditional painting and sculpture... "

"Art is no longer an object for you to look at and find beautiful, but a preparation for life."

"Aesthetics is not enough for me. It is necessary for the work to echo and reverberate the cry I carry in my chest."
